Part 1: Ron Wyatt Investigated: Why the Durupınar Formation Is Not Noah’s Ark

The search for Noah’s Ark often centers on the Durupınar site in eastern Turkey. Wyatt popularized the site by claiming this striking, boat-shaped geological formation contained fossilized deck timber, iron rivets, and matched the biblical dimensions of the Ark.

The visual resemblance to a ship is undeniably impressive, particularly its length, which approximates the 300 cubits mentioned in Genesis. However, the formation is substantially broader relative to its length than the biblical 6:1 ratio. Supporters have invoked post-depositional geological deformation to explain this discrepancy. This creates a methodological problem: the apparent match is treated as positive evidence, while discrepancies are explained away through hypothetical geological deformation.

Geological investigations have provided natural explanations for the formation, involving folded and faulted strata, erosion, and mudflow processes. Furthermore, samples identified by Wyatt and his supporters as iron brackets were subsequently identified as goethite, a naturally occurring hydrated iron oxide. The massive perforated boulders identified as “anchor stones” have not been demonstrated to have an archaeological association with the formation. A stone with a hole in it is not automatically an ancient ship’s anchor. Even David Fasold, who had initially promoted the Ark interpretation and worked with Wyatt at Durupınar, later rejected the identification after further investigation.

The Wyatt Method: Observation to Interpretation

  • Observation: A boat-shaped geological formation.
  • Interpretation: A ship.
  • Further interpretation: An ancient ship.
  • Final interpretation: Noah’s Ark.

What Is Actually Demonstrated?

  • Demonstrated: A geological formation exists that visually resembles the hull of a ship.
  • Demonstrated: Naturally occurring hydrated iron oxides (goethite) are present at the site.
  • Demonstrated: Large, perforated stones exist in the surrounding region.
  • Not demonstrated: That the iron oxides are manufactured brackets.
  • Not demonstrated: That the perforated stones are archaeologically associated with a shipwreck.
  • Not demonstrated: That any part of the formation contains an excavated, archaeologically verified wooden vessel.

Next in the Series: In Part 2, we shift from the mountains of Turkey to the subterranean tunnels of Jerusalem. We will investigate Wyatt’s sensational claims regarding the Ark of the Covenant and uncover the biological problems with his “24-chromosome” blood theory.
